After singer R. Kelly had his own #MeToo moment with #MuteRKelly, Spotify has decided to stop curating his music in its playlists. Listeners can still stream his tunes but won’t find them on any Spotify-managed playlist or suggestions like Discover Weekly. Reminder: R. Kelly has been sued by several women for sexual assault, has been charged with multiple accounts of child porn, and there are claims that he held several young women in an “abusive cult.” Last summer, music executive Oronike Odeleye started the #MuteRKelly campaign in response to all the allegations. Last month, the Women of Colour branch of the Time’s Up movement joined in and called on Kelly’s label, RCA Records, and other music providers like Spotify to put Kelly on mute. Yesterday, fresh allegations against another high-profile artist and music producer were released. Two women accused music producer, Detail, of rape and physical abuse. Shortly after the news broke, Canadian singer Jessie Reyez accused the producer of trying to do the same to her and revealed that Detail is the subject of her song, Gatekeeper. Detail has worked with artists like Drake, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z.
