A U.K. pharmaceutical firm has created the first cannabis-based medicine. The drug, Epidiolex, is made to treat severe childhood epilepsy and will become the first cannabis-based medicine on the U.S. market. The drug has been shown to reduce seizures in children.
How does it work?
Epidiolex uses a purified form of cannabidiol (CBD), one of the many molecules found in the marijuana plant (the THC portion of the plant is what gets you high. It’s not in this specific medication). While CBD doesn’t get you high, it has been found to ease pain, anxiety, nausea, and control seizures. The drug will be sold in the U.S. starting this Fall. FYI, Canada just became the second country in the world to legalize pot. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made it his mission to make cannabis legal. Which it will be, starting October 17.
