Period symptoms are the worst. From bloating to aches, you just want to laze around all day. You may feel like eating everything or you may not even feel like eating. Nevertheless, there are foods out there that can alleviate the symptoms!

 

Salmon

Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which can significantly reduce the discomfort from cramps. 

According to WebMD, a study from Danish researchers found that women who took fish oil pills in their daily diet report reported fewer period symptoms over time. Omega-3 is found to decrease the inflammation that goes on during menstruation. 

Now there is an excuse to eat more sushi rolls! For those who don't particularly like eating fish (like me), fish oil supplements are the way to go. 

 

The PMS Smoothie Recipe

- Leafy Greens

- Chia Seeds

- Bananas 

- Avocado

- Milk 

Optional:

- Nut Butter

- Ginger 

- Other fruits

Each ingredient is beneficial during the menstrual cycle. For some example, calcium is a muscle relaxant and is present in both the milk and leafy greens, such as spinach. Avocado and bananas contain potassium, a natural diuretic, which can help reduce bloating. Feel free to add a variety of fruits to the mix because Vitamin C is always a good thing.

 

Chocolate

Chocolate is seen as an indulgent treat. However, dark chocolate that has a higher percentage of cacao can help alleviate many PMS symptoms. Containing magnesium, it can lets the muscles relax to ease the discomfort of cramps. It also contains endorphins, the "happy" chemical, that improves mood and energy!

Periods can bring upon the worst moods and irritation. However, it is also a time for self-care. So as Tom from Parks and Recreation would say: treat yo' self!
