A 6 Step Skincare Routine To Treat Acne

As most of us already know, acne is an inside job. Hormones. Digestion. Stress. Water Intake. Emotions. So many things.

That doesn’t mean that we cant do things externally to help heal and move things along quicker! In this blog post I’m going to give my personal skincare routine to treat acne naturally. I’ve used this for about a year now and still continue to use it. I do the full 6 steps once a month which include the facial steaming + mask. I do the 5 steps (not including facial steaming) once a week and the rest of the steps daily at night! 

 

1. DOUBLE CLEANSING

Anyone thats been following me since the start knows that I’m a huge fan of double cleansing. Double cleansing is when you first cleanse the skin with an oil cleanser followed by a second cleanser with either a foaming or cream based cleanser. Why double cleanse? Cleansing with an oil cleanser first properly prepares the skin for the second cleanse. It does this by breaking down all the makeup, oil, dirt and pollution that has built up on the skin throughout the day. Ever heard the expression that oil breaks down oil? That's whats happening here. If you just go in with your regular cleanser first there is a good chance it isn’t even touching your skin because of all the other stuff that has built up on the surface. Improper cleansing of the skin means the rest of your skin care won't penetrate properly, like your serums and oils, meaning you won't have the results that you want! 

 

2. FACIAL STEAMING

My favourite step of them allllll. This was so good for my skin, especially when I was feeling red and irritated. What I would do is boil some filtered or distilled water and then put it into a glass bowl. I would then add herbs like calendula, chamomile, lavender, honeysuckle, chrysanthemum, rose and so on. You can add any herbs that call to you, I typically went with herbs that were antibacterial and calming! Then take a towel and drape your head over the bowl and steam your face for up to 10 minutes. Not only is this sooo relaxing and calming for the skin but its also great for opening up and cleaning out the pores. At this point, if you do have any active breakouts that are ready to pop, you should be able to do so with almost no effort, and if they don’t, leave them alone! 3. MASKING

Masks are one of my all-time favourite things to do for my skin. I love coming home after a long day, taking a shower/bath, putting a face mask on and relaaaaaxing. Using a clay mask post facial steaming is incredible for pulling all the bad stuff out of your skin + pores because the steam just opened them all up! I love to mix up my own masks using different ingredients depending on what my skin needs at the moment but my go-to mask is…

  • 1 tsp bentonite clay
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp raw honey

You can play around with the measurements a bit depending on what kind of consistency you like. I leave this on for about 20 minutes or until I literally don’t have facial expressions anymore! Use 1x weekly. 

 

4. WITCH HAZEL TONER

This step is super important because after steaming + masking your face, your pores are going to be open. Witch Hazel is whats going to close them. It’s an astringent herb that has a tightening effect on the skin and pores. It's also anti-inflammatory, calming and makes the healing process faster. All of these qualities are super beneficial for breakouts! It’s also a great alternative to traditional face toners which contain alcohol and just dry out the skin, which will end up causing more oil production, which means more breakouts! I use an alcohol-free witch hazel toner at least once a day, sometimes twice!

 

5. FACIAL OIL

This one scared the shit out of me when I first started using it. I've known for many years that OIL BREAKS DOWN OIL but there was something about putting it on my face with acne that terrified me. Once I started though, it was hugely beneficial, you just have to make sure you're using the right kinds of oils. When dealing with acne and oily skin you want to stick with HIGH LINOLEIC acid oils and non-comedogenic oils like hemp, jojoba, grapeseed, rosehip, pumpkin seed, and evening primrose oil. 

 

6. GUA SHA/ LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

In most cases, you typically wouldn't want to use a tool that slides across acne, like a Gua Sha tool, because it can spread the bacteria. But because Gua Sha tools are SO amazing at getting the lymph nodes moving, it's actually very beneficial for acne and breakouts.
