“Work from anywhere!”, “Make money while you sleep”. For most of us, these are bullshit catch phases you see on Facebook banner ads. Then there’s Rachelle. Rachelle is one of those rare people actually lives this kind of life successfully - mostly because she works her butt off.
Rachelle is the founder and Creative Director at Saevil Row, a design studio she runs from Sydney, Australia. I had the pleasure of working with her on several stunning projects over the years and caught up with her to try and understand how she succeeds where so many others fail.
WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE SAEVIL ROW?
Life before Saevil Row was working at an advertising agency as a Senior Designer. Before that, I had worked for various top Canadian Magazines, which really started and fuelled my design career post-college.
YOU’RE LIVING A LIFE OF A DIGITAL NOMAD WORKING REMOTELY FROM EITHER PARIS, TORONTO OR SYDNEY. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LIFESTYLE? HOW DO YOU MAKE IT WORK WITH YOUR CLIENTS THAT ARE OVERSEAS?
To be honest, this life was never something I dreamed of or knew was possible until I was living it day in, day out. I left Toronto in 2014 and moved to Paris, seeking change and adventure - no job, no apartment and no friends in this city I was going to call home. I remember waking up after my first night there and it just felt SO RIGHT. It wasn’t until I allowed myself the space to really focus on what I wanted, that I created Saevil Row. Fast-forward to today, I’m in Sydney and growing an international base of clients because of the travels I’ve done and people I’ve connected with along the way. I’d like to believe that my clients are all understanding of working remotely and actually encourage Saevil Row in that aspect. I’m also incredibly mindful when I’m nurturing those relationships and never let time-zones affect our communication. If the work is always delivered on time and expectations are exceeded, it shouldn’t matter where or how it gets done, as long as it does. :)
YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT BRANDING AND GOOD DESIGN. WAS THIS ALWAYS A CLEAR DIRECTION YOU WANTED TO GO?
I’ve always had an affinity with pretty things, so it’s a natural progression that our work would reflect that. I’m the most passionate about creating something that truly makes a difference to someone or a brand. Looking back, all the experience I’ve had in my career has set me up to this exact moment.
"BE CLEAR ON WHAT YOU WANT AND DREAM BIG. HAVING A GOAL AND PURPOSE IN MIND ALLOWS YOU TO WORK TOWARD SOMETHING AND ACHIEVE IT, REGARDLESS OF THE JOURNEY. IT’S HARD WORK, NO DOUBT, BUT IT’S THE MOST REWARDING THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF."
HOW DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION?
Oh, this is a goodie. Pretty much everywhere. Whether that be traveling and pulling inspiration from the ocean water and jungle trees, to seeing a gorgeous packaging design for a box of cookies! I’m always looking for interesting patterns, paying attention to architecture and generally letting the inspiration show itself to me through different mediums. And Pinterest, because I mean, it’s Pinterest!
WHAT ARE SOME FAVORITE PROJECTS YOU GOT TO WORK ON SO FAR?
We’ve just wrapped up some seriously gorgeous projects, one of them being Broma Bakery’s new custom website. Spokehaus spin studio is a fave, too. It’s like asking me to pick a favourite child…
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WANTING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
Be clear on what you want and dream big. Having a goal and purpose in mind allows you to work toward something and achieve it, regardless of the journey. It’s hard work, no doubt, but it’s the most rewarding thing you can do for yourself.
